The York International Women’s Festival is proud to announce the 2017 dates!
This year’s Festival was our longest and most successful to date and we hope to carry this enthusiasm into the 2017 celebrations which will run from Friday 3rd till Sunday 12th March.
The Festival programme is now open for event submissions: these must be received before midnight on Sunday 13th November in order to make it into the printed brochure.
This annual grassroots Festival began life in 1993 and is continued by a small committee of volunteers. It takes place in March to centre around International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8th.
The notion of a Women’s Day was introduced at the 1910 International Conference of Working Women where it was proposed that a day of celebration and action should be held to press for changes in equal pay, working conditions and voting rights.
The York International Women’s Festival includes all kinds of gigs, talks, workshops, concerts and walks designed to entertain, educate, share skills, raise awareness and stimulate debate for women and communities in and around York.
To get a flavour of the Festival, successful events from the 2016 Festival included;
- The popular ‘Frock for Frok’ clothes and accessories swap that raises vital funds for women and girls in North West Pakistan
- Free acupuncture and chiropractic treatments
- Open Art exhibition
- Community dance workshops
- Yoga, Pilates and relaxation workshops
- Feminist film screenings
- A ‘Women of York’ walking tour
